Christmas Films

December is typically the time when most businesses start winding down in preparation for a well deserved rest.

For us, it is that time of year again when a number of our clients contact us about making Christmas films as a seasonal message for their own clients or for a wider audience. 2011 has been no different. In fact, December has seen us work on three distinctly different Christmas-related short film projects.

We were approached to produce a short film about a unique PR stunt in Cirencester which involved lowering Santa into the world’s most perfectly designed chimney with the aid of a hydraulic crane – an event which was as strange as it sounds.

A young boy had written to Santa with concerns about the design of the chimney on his family’s new house. The house was in the process of being built at Lower Mill Estate so the Estate’s owners were keen to allay his fears by designing the perfect sized chimney for Santa.On a cold and dreary December morning just before Christmas we filmed proceedings which eventually made news all around the world.

But perhaps the most interesting Christmas-related film this year came from our good friends at DNA in Bristol. The idea involved over 1000 tea lights and wasn’t without logistical challenges…

Short documentary created for Endsleigh Insurance

Swift Business Films has just produced a short documentary film about a recent graduate working for Endsleigh Insurance.

Using our standard ‘day-in-the-life’ format, the film follows the working life of a recent employee at Endsleigh, highlighting their responsibilities, daily tasks and challenges.

The film will be showcased on a new graduate recruitment website for Endsleigh Insurance.

2 short documentaries produced for NFU Mutual Insurance

Swift Business Films has just finished producing two short documentaries about the Insurance firm NFU Mutual. Filmed over two days in Chester and Newtown, Wales, the films profile two independent NFU Mutual agents who each run their own businesses.

Using the format of our successful ‘Day-in-the-life’ films, these two short documentaries showcase the ins and outs of working in the insurance industry, liaising with clients and discussing farming matters.

The finished films will be showcased on a brand new website for NFU Mutual which goes live shortly

Short films commissioned for the University of Bristol

Swift Business Films has been approached to make a series of 6 short films for a new Bristol University website. The site, which will be going live in June 2011, will be aimed at encouraging international students to consider Bristol University as a centre of academic and research excellence and the city as an exciting and inspiring place to study.

The films, which will feature some user generated content, will be authored by current international students as they reflect on what they love about the city and the university.

Swift Films nominated for Media Innovation Award

The award-winning feature documentary ‘End of the Road’ has picked up another award nomination.

Hot on the heels of picking up a Bafta Scotland nomination, the film has been nominated for ‘Best Independent Film’ at the prestigious Media Innovation Awards.

This is the second time that Swift Films has been nominated for a Media Innovation Award after being nominated for ‘Best Television Production’ in 2009 for the one-off documentary ‘Race Across America’.

Exciting times for business film production

The ever-changing technological landscape means exciting times are ahead for business and corporate video production.

Canon revolutionised the video market a couple of years ago with their remarkable stills cameras (the 5D mark 2 amongst others) which were able to shoot moving images. With their large image sensors and interchangeable lenses, the results were more akin to 35mm film images. The coveted shallow depth of field suddenly became attainable for film productions. But shooting video on a stills camera was fraught with complications.

Now Panasonic and Sony have both entered the market with their own brand of large sensor cameras. And crucially these cameras are purposefully designed for shooting video. The 4/3 sensors of these new cameras (specifically Panasonic’s AF101 and Sony’s F3) now enables producers to obtain stunning images that just weren’t possible a few years ago. With third party interchangeable lenses available, suddenly there is a wealth of options for producing true film-like images for business and corporate productions. Now there is no excuse for producing flat, dull-looking images. The future looks very bright indeed.

3D production is here. Not only is it revolutionary, but it’s affordable. For anyone who has not seen Werner Herzog’s recent feature documentary ‘Cave of Forgotten Dreams’, 3D production is not just a gimmick reserved for Hollywood to squeeze extra cash out of us, the paying customer. When used properly, 3D can fully enhance the viewing experience, and fully immerse the viewer into unseen worlds. When used badly – Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ take note – it is nothing more than a painful distraction.
